CHILDREN'S BRACES
Because children are growing rapidly, they can greatly benefit from early orthodontic treatment and children's braces. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by the age of seven. By this time the first permanent incisors and molars have usually come in and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. With early treatment, an orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaws and the incoming permanent teeth. By regulating the width of the upper and lower dental arches, space can be gained for permanent teeth. This creates many benefits such as reducing the need for permanent tooth extraction and reducing the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth. Early treatment can also correct thumb-sucking and eliminate abnormal swallowing. Not only can early treatment can simplify later treatment, but further problems may arise if these problems are not addressed early on.
Signs your child needs to see an orthodontist:
-
Early or late loss of baby teeth
-
Difficulty biting/chewing food
-
Finger or thumb-sucking
-
Mouth breathing
-
Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
-
Front teeth stick out further than the other teeth
-
Teeth that come together abnormally or do not come together at all
-
The jaw is shifted when your child opens or closes their mouth
